Sighted by Columbus in 1501, Panama was where the first European,
Vasco Nunez de Balboa crossed the isthmus and sighted the Pacific
Ocean on September 12, 1513. Spanish colonies were ravaged by
Francis Drake from 1572 to 1595 and Henry Morgan from 1668 to
1671. Morgan destroyed the old city of Panama and in 1821 the
country joined Columbia. On November 3, 1903, Panama declared
independence and U.S. Naval forces repulsed a Columbia attempt to
prevent the separation. On November 18, 1903, Panama granted
use, occupation and control of the Panama Canal Zone to the U.S.
until 1999. U.S. merchant tonnage registered in Panama is high
and Panama has become a center for Central American international
banking.
